Superscript Job Description — VP of Engineering (Platform)
Location: NYC (In-Person, 5 days/week)
Team: Engineering → Platform
Level: Vice President
About Superscript
Superscript is a healthcare technology company building the products required to bring upfront purchasing to medical care. (Learn more here--> https://www.modernhealthcare.com/technology/future-consumer-first-healthcare-superscripts-transparent-pricing-tech/).
In a system where patient access to information is bottom-tier — finding care, predicting cost, navigating insurance, or understanding bills — we exist to emancipate patients from the opacity of U.S. healthcare. Our north star is a centralized healthcare marketplace that reveals the arbitrage and misaligned incentives baked into provider ↔ payer negotiations.
We believe the path to fixing healthcare lies in dragging healthcare consumerism into the modern era through true e-commerce: clear prices, transparent expectations, and the ability to shop for care the way you shop for anything else online.
Our products include:
- HFPP (Healthcare’s First Pricing Protocol) — Our proprietary healthcare pricing protocol and prediction engine that creates upfront prices in a system that does not have them
- Storefronts — Consumer shopping experiences for medical care, browse our current partners at https://shop.superscript.nyc/
- Skylight — Our medical front-desk EHR browser powering in-flight payment collection and intake
- All My Insurance Stuff — Our first stab at emancipating consumer data, try your own insurance at https://www.allmyinsurancestuff.com/
We’re a ~30-person Series A startup, live with real customers, and scaling rapidly across medical practices. Joining now means helping set the standards, patterns, and infrastructure that will endure for years.
Things We Care About
Superscript is an engineering-first organization. Our founding team consists entirely of engineers, and that DNA permeates everything we build, ship, and operationalize.
A few beliefs that define our culture:
- High agency, high ownership: Engineering does not live in a vacuum. The technology we build is the company we want to become.
- 80/20 execution: We don’t chase perfection for its own sake, we chase outsized value. Extracting 80% of the benefit from 20% of the work is often the right call.
- As little structure as possible: Not chaos, clarity. Thought leadership, personal responsibility, and strong judgment replace unnecessary process.
- Bias toward building: We move quickly, we operate with intention, and we expect everyone to contribute to the shaping of our technical and cultural foundation.
- End-user empathy: Patients, providers, and staff rely on our products to make healthcare easier, not more painful. Every engineering decision moves us closer or further from that promise.
Who We’re Looking For:
We’re looking for an opinionated, high-caliber technical leader who wants to step fully into the arena of a fast-growing, engineering-led company with multiple live products in market.
This is a hands-on VP role for someone who thrives in complexity, ambiguity, and ownership. The right candidate is energized by making hard technical and strategic decisions, communicating clearly and directly with engineers, product, and design, and owning outcomes — not just process.
The ideal candidate:
- Is a deeply technical leader who has built, shipped, and scaled real systems — and still wants to stay close to the work.
- Thrives in early-stage environments where standards are actively being set, not inherited.
- Loves wrestling complex, “non-glamorous” problems into elegant, durable solutions.
- Is testing and observability oriented by default, and treats system correctness and debuggability as first-class concerns.
- Brings strong technical opinions, but adapts them thoughtfully to the reality of the systems and team in front of them; not a prescribed playbook from a prior company.
- Takes personal responsibility for the success of their team, raises the bar through their own excellence, and multiplies impact through others.
What Makes This Role Unique
This is not a people-management-only VP role. This is a role for a technical leader who wants to own real systems in production and shape how an engineering organization scales.
You will lead the Platform team responsible for all core technology delivery that is not price prediction. This surface area includes Skylight, Storefronts, Consumer Accounts, Customer Analytics, and Integrations. Your work will define how we scale across more practices, more specialties, and more complex operational footprints — without sacrificing quality or velocity.
As VP of Engineering (Platform), you will operate at the intersection of:
- Day-to-day engineering execution and quality
- Technical architecture and long-term infrastructure strategy
- Product and design collaboration
- Real-world healthcare constraints
You will help shape Superscript’s technical standards, system boundaries, and engineering culture during a formative stage. Setting patterns that will endure for years.
If you want to own live products in market, obsess over their quality and end-user experience, and build systems that scale under real-world pressure, this role is uniquely positioned to do exactly that.
What You’ll Be Doing
This role is central to Superscript’s ability to scale from dozens to hundreds of practices, and to do so without slowdowns, regressions, or operational breakage.
Lead the technical direction of Superscript’s platform, ensuring our systems are simple, scalable, and observable as we grow.
- Drive high-leverage hands-on-keyboard technical work that force-multiplies the platform team’s effectiveness.
- Set and uphold engineering standards through all facets of our Software Development Lifecycle. Ideally raising the bar through both expectation and example.
- Own architectural decisions across services, data models, integrations, and infrastructure.
- Partner closely with Product and Design to translate complex operational and user problems into clear technical strategies and execution plans.
- Actively identify and address technical risks before they surface, unblocking teams and enabling opportunistic execution.
- Mentor and develop engineers, shaping a culture of ownership, rigor, and technical excellence.
- Take full ownership of platform outcomes — celebrating wins, owning failures, and continuously pushing for better performance.
What We’re Looking For
We don’t view these as strict prerequisites — if you're excited about the role, we’d love to talk.
Strong candidates often have:
- Significant experience leading and scaling complex backend or platform systems in production environments.
- A leadership style rooted in ownership, clarity, and high standards — empathetic to context, but never complacent about performance.
- A proven track record of making and communicating strong technical decisions in ambiguous, high-stakes contexts.
- Deep familiarity with system reliability, observability, testing strategies, and operating live systems at scale.
- The ability to adapt prior experience to a new environment by evolving systems rather than attempting wholesale rewrites.
- A strong product and end-user mindset; you care deeply about the humans interacting with the systems you build.
Nice-to-haves:
- Experience in healthcare, insurance, payments, or other regulated, high-complexity domains.
- Experience at early-stage or scaling startups where technical foundations were actively being built.
Logistics
- Location: In-person, 5 days a week at our Downtown Manhattan office.
- Compensation: Competitive salary + equity incentives
- Benefits: Health, dental, and vision insurance; meal and wellness stipends; and additional perks designed to support your life outside work.
Salary Range: $200,000-$250,000 depending on experience and subject to change
